What is an online vision test?
An online vision test is a guided self-test an employee completes on a laptop or smartphone to renew an existing eyewear prescription. They answer a short set of health and vision questions, work through the guided test, and a licensed optometrist reviews the results. If everything checks out, they receive an updated glasses or contact lens prescription, usually within 24 hours. The online vision test is one of the services employees may access through the employee technology portal under the Employer Sponsored Preventive Access (ESPA).
How the online vision test works
Intake
The employee answers a few health and vision questions and enters their current prescription so the system can confirm they qualify.
Guided vision test.
They complete the test on a laptop or smartphone. On-screen guidance walks them through each step for an accurate result.
Optometrist review.
A licensed optometrist reviews the results, usually within 24 hours.
Updated prescription.
Once it is approved, the employee receives their updated prescription and can order new glasses or contact lenses.
Most people finish the test in about 10 to 15 minutes.
Online vision test vs. a full eye exam
Renewing a glasses or contact lens prescription
The online vision test works for both glasses and soft contact lens prescriptions. An employee who wears glasses can renew their glasses prescription and then order new frames or lenses. An employee who wears soft contact lenses can renew their contact lens prescription with the same guided test. Once a licensed optometrist dispenses the updated prescription, it is theirs to use wherever they buy eyewear.
Who can use the online vision test
The online vision test is built for adults with a recent prescription. General eligibility includes:
- Adults ages 18 to 55
- A recent prior glasses or contact lens prescription
- A prescription within standard strength ranges
- Soft contact lenses or glasses, not specialty lenses
- Passing a short health questionnaire
Anyone who does not qualify is guided to in-person care instead. Full eligibility details are confirmed at the start of the test.

Employees enrolled in the ESPA may access the online vision test through the employee technology portal, the same place they reach virtual urgent care, primary care, and mental health support.
